Halloween Scare
by Margaret Marr

Black kitten hides behind a haystack,
green eyes glowing in the dark of night.
Cornstalks, smothered in pale moonlight,
cast an eerie shadow across dead fields.
Creepy scarecrows stare without sight,
scattering crows in nocturnal flight.
Chill wind howls through skeletal trees,
kicking up dead leaves in spooky shadows.
Travelers on a darkened road
...a ghost, a witch, and a devil...
approach a quiet farmhouse.
The ghost rings the bell.
The witch cackles in glee.
The devil grins in anticipation.
As the door slowly creaks open,
three little goblins heave a mighty shout,
"Trick-or-Treat"
beneath the bright porch light.
